Inauguration of Bayside Sports Complex Facilities

The hockey pitch spectator stands and changing room facilities, together with the administration block at the new Bayside Sports Complex, were inaugurated on the morning of Wednesday 26 October 2005 by the Minister for Sport, Fabian Vinet, in the presence of the Chief Minister, Peter Caruana, and the Chief Executive of the Sports and Leisure Authority, Joe Hernandez.

The large spectator stands area and ample changing room facilities (which include particular provision for disabled users) complement the water-based hockey pitch that has been in use for some time now. These facilities will also be made available for those making use of all the new outdoor sports area, with schools now having been provided access to them.

The Administration Block houses the offices of the Sports and Leisure Authority, as well as four lecture areas (three of which can be transformed into one large conference room), a squash court and a cafeteria area, the latter to be open to the public shortly.

Mr Vinet explained that any other community the size of Gibraltar would be hard-pressed to have facilities of such quality and size. He nevertheless revealed that further, wide ranging facilities will become available over the coming months. These include a water sports centre, gymnasium, tennis and paddle tennis facilities, a five-a-side football synthetic-turf pitch, golf training area, archery range and a multi-purpose games/general training area.

Mr Vinet highlighted the professionalism of the designers and the workmanship of the contractors and sub-contractors, making particular mention of the in-house design work carried out by the Government’s Technical Services Department. He also acknowledged the work of his predecessors, Clive Beltran and in particular Ernest Britto, the latter having initially spearheaded the project.

Guests at the inauguration – who were invited on a short tour of the facilities – included members of the Gibraltar Sports Advisory Council, staff of the Sports and Leisure Authority, architects, designers and contractors, the Technical Services Department representatives of schools and sporting associations, utility companies.

Mr Vinet, who said it was a privilege and an honour to inaugurate the new premises, told guests: “The present facilities, the facilities which we inaugurate today and those that will be coming on stream over the coming months, together with other developments such as the establishment of the Sports and Leisure Authority, the setting up of the Sports Development Unit, the hugely successful summer sports programme and the financial support which Government gives to associations and entities participating in international competitions, will ensure the continued development and increased success of sports in Gibraltar.”
