The IT&LD (Information Technology and Logistics Department ) is responsible for supplying Government departments with necessary IT equipment along with the introduction of software.  It is a core enabler of the services that allow Government departments to operate efficiently. The department is responsible for the maintenance and upgrading of all systems to ensure that departments are kept up to date with new available technology.

It is the aim of the Government to utilise new technologies to provide an improved and more efficient service, by firstly improving how business is transacted between Government departments. The ultimate aim is to bring Government closer to the Citizen with the aid of new technologies.

We liaise with Government departments and offer advice and solutions to any and all IT related matters.  Officers in the IT&LD are members of various professional institutes one of which must be the British Computer Society and presently all recruitments into the IT&LD are qualified IT graduates and have skills in communications, networking and software development. Departmental IT knowledge is regularly reviewed and updated with regular accredited IT courses.

Most Government departments work (Via a private Fibre-optic network infrastructure) from centrally based servers at the IT&LD thus providing a fast, scalable and secure working environment. These servers provide a full suite of network services including centralised file and printing, email & mobile phone communications, remote access, web filtering services, Network anti-virus and malware scanning, Dedicated database/application servers and security scanning tools, to name a few.

All stored data is backed up on a nightly basis to a remotely based mirror site for added security and robustness. In the event of a power cut, a UPS system provides ample time to set into motion contingency plans, whilst maintaining all server and communication roles. An additional Generator can be used in the event of longer power cuts.
Core systems (such as Taxation, Pensions, Social Security) are also duplicated at a remote site, in the event of a catastrophic failure to the main IT server farm or building, departments can quickly be redirected to an alternate site in order to minimise business disruption.
Public Services

Various forms, policy documents, regulations and other paper-based information are available from the government's website. The availability of these documents reduces waiting time at counters, where documents are usually collected manually, and can be downloaded at any time.
The Centralised infrastructure will allow the provision of online services in the future, example cases being:

• Tax Returns (P8's and deduction cards)
• Social Security contributions
• Vehicle Test bookings
• Company Registration
• Fines / Parking Ticket payments.

These (and other services) will further reduce queuing times at various Government counters. Ultimately both Citizens and Businesses will be able to access pertinent information online, conducting transactions from the comfort of their office or home.
