THE GEOLINK PROJECT
[Spain] Click here for Spanish version

What is the Geolink Project?

The project is being undertaken within the framework of the Community initiative programme INTERREG III-B SUDOE, and has been developed by Administrations of three of the beneficiary countries of this programme: Spain, United Kingdom and Portugal, together with the support of various associated entities.

The project is aimed at the creation of geographical information that will be accessible to town councils, public services, companies and citizens. This will assist in the aim of introducing information and communication technologies within territories that have low density populations and in which the existence of certain natural factors hinder inter-territorial relations. The project involves transnational co-operation amongst national, regional and local authorities belonging to the European Union.

WHO ARE THE MEMBERS OF THE PROJECT?

The project is a partnership made up of the following:

  • Diputación Provincial De Castillón (Spain) – Lead Partner

  • Associacao de Productores Florestais (AFLOPS) – Association of Foresters – Portugal

  • Diputación Provincial De Málaga (Spain)

  • Government of Gibraltar (Department of trade and Industry-Town Planning Section)

  • Universidad Autónoma De Madrid – Associate

What are the stages of the project?

Stage 1 - Study of existing  information and scope of application for each of the territories.

Stage 2 - Analysis of the GIS requirements of each partner.

Stage 3 – Development of the GIS

Stage 4 - Implementation of a centralised GIS based on different databases:

·          Cartography

·          Local infrastructure

·          Land registry and property data

·          Town-planning

·          Land use

·          Flooding and pollution risks

Stage 5 - Dissemination of information relating to the GIS.

What are the main AIMS of the project?

1.       Overcoming the limitations of cartographic information held in paper format.

A GIS allows the storage of information in electronic format, and thereby facilitates easier storage, reproduction and updating.

2.         Allowing the incorporation of several cartographic sources:

Aerial surveys, topographical surveys, images from aerial photographs, scanned images, etc.

3.         Standardising the structure of digital cartography:

Improvement of the exploitation of the geographical information and creating new ways of communication.

4.         Facilitating maintenance of the territorial information..

5.         Promoting the use of GIS as an instrument for land management and interrogation:

Solving of problems
Answering of enquiries and questions

Assisting in decision-making.
