In December 1998 a Sports Development Unit
was set up to assist and empower Governing Bodies of Sport in Gibraltar and Educational
establishments to increase participation in Sport, generally, and to improve standards.A
comprehensive programme of coach education courses and other initiatives has been put in
place, mostly delivered by experts from abroad, with the ultimate aim of achieving
self-sufficiency for our sports persons and creating pathways to excellence in sport. This
programme was launched in March 1999 in a Sports Development Seminar with the
participation of Key note speakers from abroad. The Seminar was opened by the Minister for
Sport and included a contribution from the Minister for Education.
It was attended by over seventy delegates, representing the governing bodies of sport
and all the Educational establishments.
The Unit is run by Ms Michelle Smallwood, Sports Development Officer.
