Under the International Health Regulations, all ships calling at Gibraltar Port are required to have a valid Deratting Certificate or Deratting Exemption Certificate. This states that at the time of inspection the ship was found to be free of rats and is a control against the transmission of plague. This requires a methodical inspection of the ship’s accommodation and cargo areas and should any evidence be found the certificate is not issued until the vessel has had an effective rat disinfestation. The fees charged for this service are based on the ships gross tonnage

The EC Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) is a European initiative that encourages industry to manage its environmental effects and to publicly report progress on its environmental achievements. Environmental effects requiring attention may include emissions to air and water, the management of waste for disposal on land, and the use of natural resources. EMAS involves setting up an environmental management system (EMS) to ensure that all the activities of the business that might have a significant effect on the environment are properly managed and controlled. An environmental statement is then produced to ensure the public, and other interested parties, understand the environmental impacts of the site and how they are being managed. After this has been done the site can apply to the Agency to be registered.
