Environmental Agency

Education and Training

The Environmental Health Officer has always been an educator wherever they call. For many years the department has been pro-active in promoting health education in many sections of society and has run very successful courses in conjunction with the UK Chartered Institute of Environmental Health in Food Hygiene and Health and Safety. The Agency is a fully accredited centre of the Institute conducting their courses and examinations locally since 1974. The Basic, Intermediate and Advanced Food Hygiene Certificate have been very popular with food handlers as it is a UK recognised qualification and the course is given locally in English or Spanish.

A number of restaurants have used this as a launch pad to obtain the coveted Heartbeat Award. This is a scheme which has been running for about eight years and requires high standards of hygiene and training of staff. The menu must include a percentage of healthy options (i.e. low fat, high fibre dishes) which are marked with the red heart logo and a proportion of the seating area designated as no smoking.

A number of Health and Safety Courses have been run and have been found useful by many local companies who have seen the need and benefits of training their staff in the essentials of Health and Safety. Recent courses have covered the Construction Design and Maintenance Regulations (CDM), Safe Scaffolding, Electrical Safety, Office Safety, Institute of Occupational Safety and Hygiene Course HACCP (H Analysis and Critical Control Point) and Risk Assessment.

In addition talks on Environmental Awareness have been given to schools and other interested groups.

Other courses can be tailor made to the organisations requirements.
