The Environmental Agency
has its origins in the Sanitary Commissioners who were founded in Gibraltar in the early
19th Century and constructed the fresh water and sanitation systems. This body
later evolved into the City Council out of which the Public Health Department and later
the Environmental Health Department grew. The Agency is now responsible for all the
functions dealing with Environmental Health as agents for the Government of Gibraltar.
The Agency is headed by the Chief Environmental Health Officer who
together with Environmental Health Officers, Assistant Environmental Health Officers, Pest
Control Operatives and administrative staff ensure that the Agencys responsibilities
