gha.gifThe Gibraltar Health Authority is the organisation responsible for providing health care in Gibraltar. The Authority operates a Group Practice Medical Scheme which is a contributory scheme and enables registered persons to access free medical treatment.

St. Bernard’s Hospital provides a comprehensive outpatients service and in-patient treatment for acute medical and surgical cases. With a total of 166 beds, it incorporates a maternity section and two wards for elderly patients. Facilities also exist for specialist medical services to be obtained outside Gibraltar where such services are beyond the scope of local resources.

The King George V Psychiatric Unit caters for the many diverse aspects of psychiatric treatment and has accommodation for 60 patients. Out patient clinics are also provided.

A Primary Care Centre houses the General Practice Surgeries. Provision is also made for domiciliary visits. The child welfare and school medical services, which include immunisation and vaccination, the Dental clinic and health visitors are also housed in this Centre.

A programme of visits by consultants from the United Kingdom covers certain specialities which are not provided by staff permanently employed in Gibraltar. These include, for example, Paediatric Neurology, Plastic Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery.

The Pathologist and Public Analyst are responsible for the running of the Laboratories where pathology investigations and analytical work under the Foods and Drugs Ordinance and the Public Health Ordinance are carried out.

Programmes on Health Education are co-ordinated by the Public Health Director.

Registered persons and their dependants can obtain medicines prescribed by a doctor employed by the Authority from Scheme Pharmacists on the payment of a nominal fee.
