| In 1958 Radio Gibraltar was inaugurated with
two 1-kilowatt transmitters operating on a frequency of 1484 KHz, 202.2 metres. A third
transmitter of 1-kilowatt was installed in 1965 and a fourth 1-kilowatt transmitter was
installed in 1978. The station now transmits on a frequency of 1458KHz (206 metres) with
an output of 2kW from two combined 1-kW transmitters. A VHF/FM service also operates on
91.3MHz (stereo) (200W e.r.p), 92.6 MHz (stereo) ( 1kW e.r.p.), and 100.5 MHz (stereo)
(200W e.r.p). The Gibraltar Broadcasting Corporation, formed in 1963, is responsible for
radio and television. GBC
Radio (Radio Gibraltar) broadcasts in English and Spanish 24 hours a day, an average
of 5 hours weekly being devoted to commercial broadcasting. In addition to live and
locally recorded programmes, use is made of BBC World Service relays.
GBC Television operates in English. The station operates
on Channel E6 (182.25 MHz vision, 187.75 sound) E12 (224.25 MHz vision,
229.75 sound), Ch 53 (727.258 MHz vision, 732.75 MHz sound) and Ch56
(751.25 MHz vision, 756.75 MHz sound). There were 7,500 licensed TV sets at
the end of 1997. Radio sets do not require to be licensed.

Gibraltar's daily newspaper
established in 1801 the Chronicle is the oldest media
on the Rock and amongst the world's oldest newspapers
in continuous production.
The paper's
ownership is structured as a trust and operates under
of the obligations of a charter partly modelled on the
Irish Times so as to ensure it is not political partisan,
but is fair and factual in its editorial content.
The newspaper is published daily except Sunday's and
has a broad readership locally as well as being subscribed
to by leading institutions world wide.

| The Gibraltar
newsweekly Panorama is published on Mondays. It is known for its exclusive news and
reports, complemented by a range of features and columnists as you would expect in a
general interest newspaper. It describes itself as Gibraltar's leading weekly,
Independent and free. It poineered opinion polls in Gibraltar and has, since1976,
correctly forecast all election winners. Its internet edition, which has been running
since 1998, is on www.panorama.gi
